SMARTRAC ramps up e-passport inlay production

SMARTRAC announced that production and shipment of its high security e-Passport inlays at its facility in Chanhassen, Minn. has surpassed the milestone of 1 million units in a single month.

In December 2009, production of RFID components from SMARTRAC’s Minnesota facility reached 500,000 inlays in one single month for the first time. Since then, the company has continuously expanded production capacity and workforce at the local subsidiary. [end] 

After a nearly three-year delay, the Algerian government has finally launched its biometric passport program.

Magharebia reports that the biometric passports, which contain a contactless smart card chip that holds a digitized photo, fingerprints and signature, were supposed to be released in 2009. But the documents were delayed due to complexities with the operation of the project and the need to thoroughly research and analyze other countries’ experiences with biometric passports.

UPM has reached an agreement with SMARTRAC whereby UPM will sell its RFID business to SMARTRAC. UPM will become an indirect shareholder of SMARTRAC with a 10.6% economic interest through the company OEP Technologie.
