Barclays, Barclaycard reach 5 million card milestone

UK banker Barclays and contactless payment provider Barclaycard have announced that to date they have issued over five million contactless cards in the UK.

Barclaycard began distributing contactless cards to customers in the UK in 2007 with the launch of Barclaycard One Pulse, an all-in-one card that features contactless payment, credit and Oyster card capabilities.


Today, with the recent addition of Caffe Nero and Pret A Manger, the total number of outlets now accepting contactless payment through Barclaycard exceeds 20,000, and the 5 million card mark looks like it’s just the beginning. With positive reports from Pret A Manger and Caffe Nero, Barclaycard expects to see more retailers going contactless in the near future. [end] 

Barclaycard has announced that it is helping outfit Timpson and Max Spielmann’s UK stores with new point of sale equipment for contactless payments.

Currently the largest shoe repairer, key cutter, engraver and watch repairer in the UK, the Timpson Group will see some 860 stores nationwide equipped with contactless readers, enabling customers to tap and pay with their credit and debit cards, as well as NFC-equipped mobile phones, by the end of next month.

Barclaycard Global Commercial Payments has announced the launch of the UK’s first contactless corporate payment card.

All new cardholders can make purchases of £15 or under by simply holding the card over a reader. Aside from greater convenience for customers, the cards enable businesses to track all small transactions that until now were typically made with cash.

German bank, Sparkasse will pilot contactless payments for its bank credit card users, reports Venture Village.

Locations in Hannover, Braunschweig and Wolfsburg will be some of the first for the trial, which begins in April. More than 1.3 million customers will receive the new bank cards complete with contactless functionality.

McDonald’s and Barclaycard are gearing up to launch NFC awareness campaigns aimed at spurring the adoption of contactless payment technology, according to MarketingWeek.

Barclaycard, which holds the highest share (71%) of the UK contactless market, reports that contactless transactions have doubled in the last year, but are still “nowhere near” where they want to be, according to Tom Gregory, Barclaycard’s head of digital payments.

The NFC Forum, a non-profit industry association dedicated to advancing NFC technology, has announced that credit card provider Barclaycard has become a sponsor member.

As a sponsor, Barclaycard will hold a seat on the NFC Forum Board of Directors, the organization’s governing body. According to the NFC Forum, sponsor membership is the highest level of involvement in the organization.
