SEPTA puts out call for smart card proposals
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, better known by its acronym SEPTA, has requested proposals for its new smart card fare collection system, leaving it up to the bidding companies to specifically spell out how such a system can be implemented. However, the organization wants a system that will allow passengers to use credit cards, prepaid SEPTA cards and cell-phones to pay for their trips.
The system is expected to replace the tokens, tickets and magnetic-stripe cards that passengers use on buses, subways, trains and trolleys. Implementation of the new system will take several years with cost estimates running as high as $100 million.
