GlobalPlatform white paper details versatility of SAMs with remote management

Thursday, December 22, 2011

GlobalPlatform released a white paper explaining how technology can be leveraged to enhance the flexibility and security of electronic transaction systems, such as a public transport authority or electronic identity provider.

The paper mainly focuses on transit as an example – a city transport network that enables users to access the system using a smart token rather than purchasing paper tickets.

The white paper titled “GlobalPlatform Value Proposition for Remote Post-Issuance Secure Access Modules (SAMs) Management” discusses topics including secure access modules (SAMs) which form part of a smart chip and are widely used in contactless e-transaction systems to store the authentication keys and cryptographic functions required to authorize transactions, and securely communicate with the centralized system.

By implementing GlobalPlatform specifications, SAMs can be remotely managed using “over-the-air” or “over-the-Internet” technology to make updates such as renewing the cryptographic keys. This eliminates the need and cost of issuing new SAMs when such network updates are required.

Jointly developed by ActivIdentity, Aconite, Collis and FIME, the white paper and the specifications it references can be downloaded at the GlobalPlatform Web site[end]

GlobalPlatform launched its latest specifications for the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE).

The organization has released two new specifications primarily for use by software developers working within the TEE space. The “TEE Systems Architecture v1.0” explains the hardware and software architectures behind the TEE, while the “TEE Internal API Specification v1.0” specifies how to develop trusted applications.
