Subway to introduce PayPass contactless payments

Subway, the world’s largest sandwich chain, has announced it will begin accepting MasterCard PayPass contactless payments at more than 7,000 U.S. locations by the end of the first quarter of 2012.

The new system will enable customers to simply tap their PayPass-enabled MasterCard card, mobile phone, key fob or any other device on a contactess reader at check-out to pay for their orders.


Subway’s 7,000 restaurants will join the nearly 341,000 merchant locations worldwide already accepting PayPass, including quick-service restaurants, retailers, airports, sports stadiums and arenas, supermarkets, vending machines and taxis.

As of the second quarter of 2011, nearly 100 million PayPass-enabled cards and devices have been issued worldwide, according to MasterCard. [end] 

Identive Group announced tomPAY, an NFC-enabled sticker tag that can be affixed to existing mobile phones to enable contactless payments.

Based on Identive’s tom (tag on metal) smart inlay technology, tomPAY is manufactured using the same processes as an ISO PVC card. When placed on a phone, tomPAY enables contactless mobile payments in compliance with MasterCard PayPass specifications, as well as loyalty, transport ticketing and other m-commerce services.

MasterCard’s PayPass contactless payment feature may soon be presented to the Azerbaijan market of cashless payments.

According to a recent MasterCard study, 75% of the local residents said they would like to use contactless payment cards in supermarkets and 60% to pay public transport fare. When asked which devices, in addition to a plastic card, it would be convenient to make payments, 86% of respondents said they would like to use their mobile phone.

First Data and Austria-based organic foods supermarket chain, denn’s Biomarkt have partnered to introduce contactless card acceptance at denn’s Biomarkt stores.

The organic supermarket selected First Data to renew its point-of-sale terminal infrastructure with the installation of contactless payment readers. Using contactless technology, customers are offered greater speed and convenience at the check-out.
