Timpson Group becomes latest UK retailer to go contactless

Barclaycard has announced that it is helping outfit Timpson and Max Spielmann’s UK stores with new point of sale equipment for contactless payments.

Currently the largest shoe repairer, key cutter, engraver and watch repairer in the UK, the Timpson Group will see some 860 stores nationwide equipped with contactless readers, enabling customers to tap and pay with their credit and debit cards, as well as NFC-equipped mobile phones, by the end of next month.


According to Barclaycard, there are now more than 13.5 million contactless-enabled Barclays debit and Barclaycard credit cards used at outlets such as Prêt a Manger, EAT and Subway, as well as as the Wembley and O2 Arenas. [end] 

Identive Group announced tomPAY, an NFC-enabled sticker tag that can be affixed to existing mobile phones to enable contactless payments.

Based on Identive’s tom (tag on metal) smart inlay technology, tomPAY is manufactured using the same processes as an ISO PVC card. When placed on a phone, tomPAY enables contactless mobile payments in compliance with MasterCard PayPass specifications, as well as loyalty, transport ticketing and other m-commerce services.

Chinese handset manufacturer ZTE has partnered with Turkcell, Turkey’s largest mobile operator, to offer a new SIM-based NFC mobile device for the Turkish market.

The Turkcell T11 handset (aka the ZTE Racer II) can be used to pay for both highway toll payments and items at the point of sale with a simple tap against a contactless reader.
