RGB to launch Austria's first contactless credit cards

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Raiffeisen Banking Group Austria (RBG) has announced that it will introduce contactless credit cards in Austria.

Starting in August, RBG will begin issuing MasterCard PayPass-enabled contactless cards, which can be used to tap and pay at contactless terminals throughout the country - no PIN or signature required.

According to RGB, the technology has already been successfully piloted at selected SV Group locations using hobex payment systems terminals.

RGB says it will work to expand the network of contactless acceptance points in the coming months.

With more than 2,200 branches, RGB is Austria’s largest banking group, representing approximately a quarter of the country’s entire domestic banking market. [end]

HSBC announced that it will begin the conversion to contactless technology this month, replacing all customer banking debit cards, according to ThinkMoney.com.

The bank will start to roll out the new contactless cards to existing customers whose debit cards are due to expire this month and then continue the process as cards expire. Customers who don’t want a contactless card can opt out by contacting their bank before their current card expires.
