Citibank brings PayPass to Czech Republic

Citibank is launching the Czech Republic’s first contactless Shell MasterCard credit card, reports BBR.

Equipped with MasterCard’s PayPass contactless technology, the cards will allow customers to make tap-and-go payments at Shell stations and other retailers with supporting technology, says BBR.


According to Citibank Czech Republic head of consumer lending George Denisenko, the success of contactless technology in a number of European countries, namely Slovakia and Poland, inspired the PayPass deployment.

Denisenko says the technology will be available for Czech clients this fall.

HSBC announced that it will begin the conversion to contactless technology this month, replacing all customer banking debit cards, according to ThinkMoney.com.

The bank will start to roll out the new contactless cards to existing customers whose debit cards are due to expire this month and then continue the process as cards expire. Customers who don’t want a contactless card can opt out by contacting their bank before their current card expires.
