SEPTA seeks federal funding for smart card system

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is applying for a $29.3 million TIGER II grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to fund a contactless smart card fare system, according to progressiverailroading.com.

SEPTA hopes to use the grant along with $48 million in agency funding to migrate from tickets and tokens to a fare system that would allow passengers to pay via bank, credit and debit cards, as well as with prepaid contactless SEPTA cards.

SEPTA also plans to expand the system to include regional rail and the Broad Street and Market-Frankford lines as funds become more available, says progressiverailroading.com.
