Taiwan's smart ticketing system set for 2010 launch

Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) has announced that the country’s new integrated transit card system is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year, according to squidcard.com.

The new $16.9 million system will allow passengers to use a single smart card for traveling across the country’s bus and rail networks.


So far, nearly 22 million smart cards have been issued in Taiwan, 18 million of which are Taipei’s Easycards, which function as contactless payment passes in the capital’s transit network.

UK-regional bus group Bluestar has launched a new transit card for discounted weekly and monthly travel on its network, according to Southern Daily Echo.

The new card enables cashless fare for any service on the Bluestar Network in Southampton, Eastleigh and Winchester. It also supports travel on Wilts & Dorset buses and Southern Vectis on the Isle of Wight, both of which are owned and operated by Go-Ahead Group.

Acer is planning to launch NFC-enabled smart phones for mobile banking and contactless payments, according to Taiwan News.

Acer product manager Vincent Chen told TN that the new phones will likely run on Windows 8, which is expected to support NFC technology. According to Chen, the roll out will depend on how quickly the five major mobile operators in Taiwan can agree upon a contactless mobile payments platform.
