Little Chef next to go contactless with Barclaycard

Monday, July 19, 2010

UK roadside restaurant chain Little Chef has announced the deployment Barclaycard’s contactless payment technology at all 173 of its locations.

The rollout, which will enable customers to pay for the check with a tap of their credit or debit cards, also includes Little Chef’s Coffee Tempo brand and Burger King franchises.

Although Barclaycard has already successfully implemented contactless payment in establishments such as EAT and Subway, the company says Little Chef is the first UK restaurant group to “fully” embrace contactless.

The system is live now and will be promoted to customers with a full range of Point of Sale material in all restaurants. The restaurant chain has opted for Barclaycard’s own technology and had new machines installed to support this where required. [end]

Analysis from Datamonitor shows sluggish adoption of contactless payment in the UK due to recession, while Barclaycard is arguing the opposite, according to internetretailing.net.

Gilles Ubaghs, financial analyst at Datamonitor, calls the situation a “catch 22.” Consumers aren’t interested in owning a contactless card if there’s nowhere to use it, and retailers don’t want to invest in contactless POS equipment if so few people are using the cards.
