Kena Kai launches new line of RF shielded wallets

Monday, July 5, 2010

California-based Kena Kai is launching a new line of wallets specifically designed to protect contactless cards from data theft.

The secret of the new DataSafe wallets is the multiple layers of radio-frequency (RF) shielding embedded in the material, which the company says can block unwanted “skimming” of personal information.

According to Kena Kai, there are more than 50 million contactless credit cards in circulation in the US that could be vulnerable to skimming attacks.

“Without even removing their cards from wallets or pockets, consumers can potentially see their privacy and security compromised,” says Ari Juels, a researcher at RSA Labs. “A scanner in a crowded subway station might surreptitiously harvest credit card data from passersby.”

The wallets, which are made of faux patent-leather and come in 5 different colors, are now available on Kena Kai’s website for $70. [end]
