Monday, July 5, 2010

The city of Edmonton, Canada is considering adopting a smart card system for transit, public libraries, parking, recreational facilities and other municipal services, according to CBC News.

In February, Edmonton’s transportation and public works committee approved a report from city staff on the card for the Edmonton Transit System, which detailed plans for a debit-like smart card that would grant citizens access to multiple city services.

A more detailed proposal is expected to make it to the council for the 2012-14 capital budget discussions in the fall, says CBC News.

Recent figures suggest that the system would cost $23 million to implement, with a $6.9 million net return by 2025.
