Spar convenience stores to adopt contactless payment system

Dutch-based convenience store chain Spar has announced plans to roll out a new contactless payment system, according to retailmoves.com.

The system, called SPARPoS, will enable customers to make purchases of up to £15 with contactless debit or credit cards.

Spar has chosen Business Computer Projects to help develop the technology for the system, which the company has already trialled at the Spar in Haymarket and three other London stores.

Regarding the scope of the project, Spar UK Retail IT Controller Roy Ford commented that “the system will be rolled out, as appropriate, to other Spar stores so our customers can take advantage of contactless payment at their local store as their regular credit and debit cards are replaced by contactless enabled cards and the stores can benefit from reduced transaction costs.”

Survey: Germans coming around to NFC, contactless payments

A new survey from Euro Kartensysteme shows that Germans are starting to embrace the idea of contactless and NFC payments.

Out of 1,040 Germans aged 18-59, 43% responded that they would like to make contactless payments if given the opportunity, of which 58% percent would make their payments with a debit card card, 41% with a credit card and 50% with an NFC phone.

HMV launches Visa payWave contactless payments across Canada

Entertainment retail chain HMV has announced it will adopt Visa payWave contactless payments in 116 stores across Canada.

Starting this month, HMV customers nationwide will be able to pay for music, DVDs, video games, books and more with a simple tap of their contactless payWave-enabled credit or debit card at the point of sale.
