Atmel's unveils secure microcontroller certified for e-passport applications

Atmel Corporation today announced that FIME, an independent third party laboratory, has certified the Atmel AT90SC28880RCFV secure microcontroller (MCU) as compliant with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Radio Frequency Specifications and ISO 14443 RF.

Additionally, a FIME laboratory banking test shows that the device has up to 100 percent interoperability with a list of 32 readers.


According toJ ean-Pierre Enguent, application manager for contactless products at Atmel, the AT90SC28880RCFV chip provides extended radio frequency capabilities, computational performance and low-power consumption.

“The product targets applications including Extended Access Control within e-Passport programs and governmental ID cards. In addition, the Atmel secureAVR-based microcontroller is designed to be Common Criteria EAL5+ certified.”

Atmel’s AT90SC2880RCFV samples are now available in DIL packages and dual-interface micromodules. [end] 

Atmel Corp. announced availability of an AVR microcontroller (MSU) with an RFID reader block and 16kBytes of in-system self-programmable flash.

The Atmel ATA5505 is one of the industry’s first MCU that features full low-frequency (LF) RFID reader functionality within a single package, unlike others where the MCU and RFID reader are located in two different packages. This translates into customers being able to develop and manufacture small, low-cost reference PCBs for various reader types.

After a nearly three-year delay, the Algerian government has finally launched its biometric passport program.

Magharebia reports that the biometric passports, which contain a contactless smart card chip that holds a digitized photo, fingerprints and signature, were supposed to be released in 2009. But the documents were delayed due to complexities with the operation of the project and the need to thoroughly research and analyze other countries’ experiences with biometric passports.

Infineon Technologies has released the first samples of its 65 nanometer embedded flash (eFlash) microcontrollers for chip card and security applications.

Co-developed by TSMC, the microcontroller features a 65 nm footprint that provides greater efficiency over former IC technologies, according to Infineon. The partners have also announced the development of new 300 mm wafers as a more efficient alternative to 200 mm models.
