LaserCard to present anti-counterfeit, multi-technology smart card solution

LaserCard Corporation has announced it will present its newly released multi-technology smart card solution at the Smart Card Alliance 2010 Conference, May 17-20 in Scottsdale, AZ.

The new ID solution features counterfeit-resistant optical security media coupled with other mainstream smart card technologies on a single card, tailored specifically for the needs of government ID programs around the world.


According to LaserCard, interest in multi-technology ID cards is increasing among governments worldwide as they seek to combine multi-functionality with high security in applications ranging from Patient ID to e-government to border crossing.

So far, LaserCard has delivered its multi-technology solution for the new U.S. Green Card, the first of which were issued just this past week, and the Carabinieri (Italian Police Force). [end] 

RSA Security executives spelled out the company’s product strategy for 2012, announcing that it would focus on mobile, anti-threat and cloud security.

As reported in Network World, RSA wants to develop tools that can help businesses improve data protection on mobile devices by separating personal and corporate data and improving mobile device authentication. RSA’s strategy includes adding more factor options to multi-factor authentication and embedding SecurID technology in mobile phones.

Singapore-based company Innova Technology has developed a smart card designed to help consumers hang onto their wallets, smart phones and other small items.

As reported on CNET, Innova’s “anti-Loss” product is a smart card that functions via Bluetooth. Users can put it with their wallet, purse or other similar small, valuable items.

The Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) announced that the registration of Emirati newborns is now mandatory for electronic passports (e-passport) and ID cards, according to ArabianBusiness.com.

The U.S. government has settled an infringement case with Leighton Technologies by agreeing to license its smart cards.

Leighton Technologies, a subsidiary of General Patent, filed a case against the federal government in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in January 2010. Leighton alleged that 54 federal agencies used its six smart card patents without authorization. Leighton’s technology was also used in e-passports.

Prisoners at Tihar prisons, located near New Delhi, India, will now be using smart cards instead of paper coupons for their food purchases.

As reported by The Economic Times, the former system of paper food coupons led to misuse and illegal activity within the jail. Some prisoners would use it for currency in order to get banned substances or buy favors from others.
