Entrust launches new e-passport solution

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Entrust has announced the official availability its SPOC e-passport solution.

Developed by the European Union (EU) and the Brussels Interoperability Group (BIG), SPOC serves as the standardized mechanism for certificate management between countries for support of EAC-enabled e-passport.

According to Brussels Interoperability Committee chairman Bob Carter, “SPOC is an absolutely necessary component for the efficient deployment of EAC (technology for securely storing biometric data) in the EU. The model enables countries to move forward in the adoption of EAC-enabled ePassports, while simplifying cross-jurisdiction certificate management for the inspection of these advanced passports at border security points.”

Entrust’s SPOC implementation is deployable in isolation or as a component of the comprehensive Entrust ePassport solution. When integrated with Entrust’s e-passport solution, the SPOC provides configurable options for manual, queued and automated processing of domestic and international certificate exchange and communication.

Additionally, Entrust provides a unique dual-rooted e-passport PKI certification authority (CA) to allow seamless migration from first-generation (BAC) deployments to second-generation (EAC) architectures. [end]

After a nearly three-year delay, the Algerian government has finally launched its biometric passport program.

Magharebia reports that the biometric passports, which contain a contactless smart card chip that holds a digitized photo, fingerprints and signature, were supposed to be released in 2009. But the documents were delayed due to complexities with the operation of the project and the need to thoroughly research and analyze other countries’ experiences with biometric passports.
