Orlen, Carrefour plan contactless roll out for European service stations

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Two European service station giants are upgrading to contactless payment, according to Scottrade.

Orlen Germany, subsidiary of PKN Orlen, is installing contactless payment terminals in its German service stations, and France’s Carrefour has announced plans to implement contactless readers throughout its entire network.

Orlen, who is partnering with Scheidt & Bachmann for the project, has already set up PayPass terminals at approximately 120 stations, and plans to complete all 511 installations by the end of the year.

The new system allows MasterCard PayPass card holders to make payments of up to 25 Euro by tapping the cards against the payment terminal.

Orlen expects the new system to be particularly successful due to the higher 25 Euro spending limit. According to Scottrade, low spending limits have been hindering contactless payment from really taking off at the pumps.

Carrefour is also planning a similar rollout. The company has signed an agreement with Hypercom to install readers at all of its 210 hypermarkets and 1,200 service stations in France.
