India inaugurates smart card system for BPL families

The first Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in Mangalore, India are receiving smart cards starting at the end of March, according to The Times of India.

The smart cards, which are intended to replace old ration cards, facilitate government distribution of basic amenities to families in need.

The distribution plan is based on a survey conducted by the Department of Rural Development in 2002, and follows the following schedule:

March 30 - 252 families of Thenka Yekkar village; 125 families of Delathabettu village; 119 families of Madhya village; 42 families of Attur village; 33 families of Kilenjoor village; 11 families of Nadugodu village; 64 families of Kondemoola village.

March 31 - 26 families of Panja village; 76 families of Koykude village; 243 families of Surinje village; 62 families of Pavanje village; 270 families of Haleyangady village.
