Scottish council area launches smart money with sQuid

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Dumfries and Galloway, the southernmost council area of Scotland, is adopting sQuid’s contactless eMoney technology for its National Entitlement Card (NEC).

Dumfries and Galloway citizens with NECs can now have sQuid eMoney added to their cards, enabling them to pay for small value items from a pre-loaded electronic purse.

Users can manage their purse from an online sQuid account, with loading available in-store.

In addition, cadholders can now use their NECs to access public services like concessionary travel, library membership and leisure center membership.

Dumfries and Galloway will be the third UK launch zone for sQuid, following the success of similar deployments in Bolton and Dundee.

According to sQuid, the near future will bring more applications for the card, such as travel and loyalty programs. sQuid may also be integrated into cashless catering in local Dumfries and Galloway area schools. [end]
