BISP distributes 34,000 smart cards to Paki IDP's

Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), in partnership with United Bank Limited has distributed more than 34,000 smart cards among the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) of the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan, according to tradingmarkets.com.

So far, 34,357 registered IDPs in Charsadda, Lower Dir, Malakand Agency, Buner and Swat districts have received the cards, which grant recipients a monthly stipend of Rs 1000 through the Benazir Income Support Program and United Bank Limited.


BISP has established centers in different parts of the province to aid distribution and provide proper guidelines for effective use of the cards.

More than 100 franchises are being established in the Malakand division that will accept the cards as a form of payment.

The U.S. government has settled an infringement case with Leighton Technologies by agreeing to license its smart cards.

Leighton Technologies, a subsidiary of General Patent, filed a case against the federal government in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in January 2010. Leighton alleged that 54 federal agencies used its six smart card patents without authorization. Leighton’s technology was also used in e-passports.

SecuGen announced that the General Services Administration added two of its fingerprint scanners to the FIPS 201 Evaluation Program Approved Products list.

The solutions, which are both compliant with the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Personal Identity Verification FIPS 201 standard, are the Hamster IV v2 fingerprint reader and ID-USB SC/PIV v2 combined fingerprint and smart card reader.

Prisoners at Tihar prisons, located near New Delhi, India, will now be using smart cards instead of paper coupons for their food purchases.

As reported by The Economic Times, the former system of paper food coupons led to misuse and illegal activity within the jail. Some prisoners would use it for currency in order to get banned substances or buy favors from others.
