Irish banks eye NFC, contactless cards

Irish banks are considering offering support for mobile payment using NFC technology, according to the Irish Examiner.

Representatives from Visa Europe are meeting with banks in Dublin this week to negotiate a deal that would bring the technology to Ireland. Plans are expected to be finalized by 2011.

Visa Europe is also working on Irish banks to adopt a new contactless debit cards for purchases under €20. According to Visa, the cards are ideal for use in fast food restaurants, convenience stores, transport terminals, vending machines and parking meters.

According to abc.az, MasterCard is in negotiation with the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, as well as Azerbaijan private banks regarding the implementation of projects on non-cash payments and the introduction of contactless cards for payments for applications in transit, dining and entertainment.

Sparkasse issues 1.3 million contactless bank cards

German bank, Sparkasse will pilot contactless payments for its bank credit card users, reports Venture Village.

Locations in Hannover, Braunschweig and Wolfsburg will be some of the first for the trial, which begins in April. More than 1.3 million customers will receive the new bank cards complete with contactless functionality.
