Kosky extends free myki card offer

As one of her last actions in office, newly resigned Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky has announced that Victorians will be able to get free myki cards online until Jan. 31, according to Berwick News.

So far, over 160,000 cards have been ordered, according to Kosky.


After January 31, myki cards will $10 for full fare and $7 for concession. Students will be still be able to receive free myki cards when they submit their application for the 2010 Victorian Public Transport Student Concession Card at a staffed train station or the MetShop.

Kosky’s replacement, former union boss Martin Pakula, has announced that fixing the maligned myki network will be his top priority, and hopes to have the system up and running in 12 to 18 months.

UK-regional bus group Bluestar has launched a new transit card for discounted weekly and monthly travel on its network, according to Southern Daily Echo.

The new card enables cashless fare for any service on the Bluestar Network in Southampton, Eastleigh and Winchester. It also supports travel on Wilts & Dorset buses and Southern Vectis on the Isle of Wight, both of which are owned and operated by Go-Ahead Group.

Zebra and Checkpoint Systems have entered into a cooperative relationship and licensing agreement. While the exact terms of the transaction were not disclosed, the relationship does bring together Zebra’s active location solutions with Checkpoint division OATSystems’ passive RFID, auto-ID and sensor capabilities.

Kraft has rolled out vending machines in Chicago and New York that give out free pudding samples to adults. The machines estimate the age of the individual by using facial recognition technology, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The Government of Victoria may drop the problem-plagued myki smart ticketing system altogether, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

Called “a mess” by Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder, the $1.35 billion system has weathered technical issues and rising costs on top of a three year delay. Accounting firm Deloitte says that the cost of cutting the cord now could be as much as $1 billion.

Inside Secure has launched a free, open-source NFC protocol stack for Google’s new Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” mobile operating system.

According to Inside, Open NFC 4.3.3 is compliant with the Ice Cream Sandwich release Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) for NFC, and supports all the latest Android NFC features, including Android Beam and WiFi Direct pairing connection.
