New Yorkers could be using E-ZPass style smart cards at turnstiles within the next two years, according to gothamist.com. At an exit interview, outgoing MTA CEO Elliot Sander promised commuters new card or key fob style passes that would be read by sensors installed at turnstiles throughout the city.

Unlike the current MetroCards, which must have cash added onto them at renewal stations, the new passes would automatically deduct the fare from the holder’s bank account.
