Pittsburgh considers smart cards for transit, parking

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Pittsburgh’s Port Authority has outlined plans to use smart cards to pay for nearly every mode of transportation, including bus fares, bike rentals, and even parking fees, according to The Pittsburgh Tribune.

In addition to the $33 million left over from construction of the West Busway, the Port Authority is seeking $10.9 million in federal stimulus money to create a smart card system that will include nine proposed “rapid bus” routes, metered parking at special down town and Oakland garages, and some 70 bike sharing stations. The government will announce whether or not it will provide funding in January.

Over the next several months crews will install card readers on Port Authority buses, and in the spring University of Pittsburgh students will test the system.
