Oberthur simplifies EMV migration for U.S. card issuers

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Oberthur Technologies, French provider of smart cards, including contactless, has rolled out its EMV migration solution, “EMV-in-a-Box,” for U.S. card issuers. EMV-in-a-Box is an integrated EMV migration solution and management program that includes on-site consultation, EMV training, project management and technical support. The migration plan enables EMV cards to be issued within 12 weeks from project initiation.

“At a time when the global marketplace is migrating to EMV to fight against rapidly increasing payment fraud, the U.S. will become isolated if it stays with magstripe-only technology,” said Martin Ferenczi, managing director of the Americas Region for Oberthur’s Card Systems Division. He said Oberthur can “effectively deploy EMV cards in the U.S. today.”

EMV is a global specification for credit and debit payment cards based on chip card technology. The EMV standard, which offers enhanced security versus traditional magstripe cards, has widespread use and acceptance worldwide, except for the U.S.

Oberthur’s ISO 9001 certified manufacturing facility in southeast Pennsylvania recently completed a multi-million dollar expansion plan that’s designed to produce 20 million cards a month. EMV card personalization can take place at either of Oberthur’s two bi-coastal service centers in Los Angeles or Chantilly, Va. [end]

The report describes the evolution contactless payment methods used at point-of-sale, with reference to the solutions offered under the American Express/MasterCard/Visa Agreement. The report also examines the prospects for the development of contactless payments all over the world, including the potential to develop into NFC-based mobile payments.
