Credit union taps Tyfone to deliver mobile financial services

Tyfone, a Portland, Ore. mobile financial services provider, has been chosen by Oregon’s largest credit union to supply the infrastructure for the financial institution’s mobile banking service.

Tyfone’s technology integrates the secure element , an NFC contactless chip and antenna on standard secure digital memory cards allowing memory card-enabled phones to become instantly capable of secure transactions and contactless payments. OnPoint Community Credit Union, with more than $2.8 billion in assets, will leverage Tyfone’s u4ia platform to first deploy mobile banking services with NFC contactless mobile payment capabilities to follow.

Tyfone has announced that it will provide its suite of mobile wallet services to CoVantage Credit Union (CVCU).

CVCU will use Tyfone’s technology to offer customers contactless mobile payments via a memory card through its nine branches in Wisconsin and Michigan. According to Tyfone, the the secure element in the memory card enables CVCU to dictate the financial service without interference from the mobile operator.

Visa has announced that more than 1 million EMV chip-enabled cards have been issued by U.S. financial institutions as of December 31, 2011.

Just 18 months ago there were no Visa-branded EMV chip cards issued in the U.S. according to Visa’s Stephanie Ericksen, who attributes the sudden growth to U.S. issuers accepting Visa’s EMV and mobile payments road map.

The European Payments Council (EPC) has published the second edition of its “White Paper on Mobile Payments.”

According to EPC, the white paper focuses on the usage of the mobile payments in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and explores how m-payment services can be delivered through cooperation between service providers in the payment industry and players within the mobile ecosystem.

OnPoint Community Credit Union, an Oregon-based institution, has announced the launch of Tyfone’s iCashé Mobile Wallet program.

The new service enables OnPoint’s 226,000 members to buy gift cards over a mobile phone and send them to others via SMS or email. Gift card recipients can use their cards in-store or online via their smart phone or with a printed copy of the confirmation email.
