INSIDE Contactless, Cryptography Research sign agreement on security patents

Chip maker INSIDE Contactless and Cryptography Research (CRI) have signed an agreement regarding the use of CRI’s patented countermeasures that protect against a specific semiconductor attack known as differential power analysis (DPA). The countermeasures add security to tamper-resistant chips, such as INSIDE’s MicroPass and other secure semiconductor products.


Under the agreement, INSIDE may use CRI’s patents as part of the security strategy for its contactless semiconductor products which are used around the world in a variety of form factors, including contactless cards, key fobs, mobile payment bridge products, and NFC secure elements for mobile phones.

The license also covers third-party software executing on INSIDE’s MicroPass chip products, allowing INSIDE’s customers to develop their own DPA countermeasures without the need for a separate license from CRI. According to Charles Walton, executive vice president of payments for INSIDE Contactless, “this agreement allows INSIDE to distribute MicroPass products with DPA countermeasures to our manufacturing customers without their need to distinctly obtain licensing from CRI.”

DPA is a form of attack that involves monitoring the fluctuating electrical power consumption of a target device and then using advanced statistical methods to derive cryptographic keys and other secrets. [end] 

Research and Markets announced the addition of Polasik Research’s contactless payment cards market report, “The Global Contactless Payment Cards Market”, to its offering.

The report describes the evolution contactless payment methods used at point-of-sale, with reference to the solutions offered under the American Express/MasterCard/Visa Agreement. The report also examines the prospects for the development of contactless payments all over the world, including the potential to develop into NFC-based mobile payments.

StarChip and CEA-Leti have inked a partnership agreement to develop a contactless front end for smart card applications.

The partnership includes technology and know-how transfer to StarChip. With this combined experience in secure integrated circuit development and contactless technology, StarChip will roll out state-of-the-art smart card products to enable applications in transport, banking and identity.

Google has acquired 188 patents and 29 patents pending from IBM, some of which concern NFC technology, reports ZDNet.

Adding to the 2,053 IBM patents already turned over to Google in the past year, these new patents cover databases, mobile phones, server infrastructure, wireless telephone systems, NFC and other patents that may relate to Google’s Android mobile operating system.
