Middle East bank launches Visa payWave

One of the UAE’s top banks, the National Bank of Abu Dhabi has rolled out Visa’s contactless payWave card for its customers. The card will eliminate the need for PINs, online approvals and signatures for low value purchases.

“Visa is working with banks across the Gulf Cooperation Council to introduce payWave and National Bank of Abu Dhabi’s launch of a Visa payWave credit card signals an acceptance of contactless technology which is already established in other parts of the world,” said Kamran Siddiqi, Visa’s general manager for the Middle East.

BPC Banking Technologies and Alfa-Bank have teamed up to complete the first certified Visa PayWave launch in Russia, according to RFP Connect.

Alfa-Bank, which boasts some 200 branches throughout Russia, will distribute contactless PayWave Visa cards to its customers to enable low-value contactless payments at the point of sale. To pay, customers need only tap their PayWave card against a contacltess reader at checkout - no PIN of signature required. Transactions are protected by 128-bit technology that generates unique cryptograms for each payment, according to BPC.

Visa Europe has announced that six of Germany’s leading banks are launching Visa payWave contactless services in 2012.

BW Bank, comdirect, DKB, Landesbank Berlin, TARGOBANK and Volkswagen Bank have all confirmed their plans to roll out payWave technology by the middle of next year.

Entertainment retail chain HMV has announced it will adopt Visa payWave contactless payments in 116 stores across Canada.

Starting this month, HMV customers nationwide will be able to pay for music, DVDs, video games, books and more with a simple tap of their contactless payWave-enabled credit or debit card at the point of sale.

German bank, Sparkasse will pilot contactless payments for its bank credit card users, reports Venture Village.

Locations in Hannover, Braunschweig and Wolfsburg will be some of the first for the trial, which begins in April. More than 1.3 million customers will receive the new bank cards complete with contactless functionality.
