Barclaycard launching chip-based loyalty program

Barclaycard plans to launch a loyalty scheme in the next 12 months that uses the chip on the card to offer instant rewards, according to a Retail Week news report.

“The scheme must be simple and convenient for customers, with no need to have vouchers and coupons. It must utilize the power of the chip inside the credit card to be totally electronic, instant and incredibly intuitive to the cardholder. We’ve all collected different rewards over the years in a wide range of schemes and, for most of us, we will only ever redeem a few of them – I have no desire to add to the points mountain,” said Antony Jenkins, Barclaycard chief executive.

McDonald’s and Barclaycard are gearing up to launch NFC awareness campaigns aimed at spurring the adoption of contactless payment technology, according to MarketingWeek.

Barclaycard, which holds the highest share (71%) of the UK contactless market, reports that contactless transactions have doubled in the last year, but are still “nowhere near” where they want to be, according to Tom Gregory, Barclaycard’s head of digital payments.

Visa has announced that more than 1 million EMV chip-enabled cards have been issued by U.S. financial institutions as of December 31, 2011.

Just 18 months ago there were no Visa-branded EMV chip cards issued in the U.S. according to Visa’s Stephanie Ericksen, who attributes the sudden growth to U.S. issuers accepting Visa’s EMV and mobile payments road map.

The NFC Forum, a non-profit industry association dedicated to advancing NFC technology, has announced that credit card provider Barclaycard has become a sponsor member.

As a sponsor, Barclaycard will hold a seat on the NFC Forum Board of Directors, the organization’s governing body. According to the NFC Forum, sponsor membership is the highest level of involvement in the organization.

Barclaycard Global Commercial Payments has announced the launch of the UK’s first contactless corporate payment card.

All new cardholders can make purchases of £15 or under by simply holding the card over a reader. Aside from greater convenience for customers, the cards enable businesses to track all small transactions that until now were typically made with cash.
