LEGIC helps Visa payWave cards go multi-functional

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

Users of Visa payWave cards released by Cornèrcard, one of Switzerland’s largest card issuers, could soon use the same credit card as an ID badge for car sharing, gaining access to leisure or club facilities or as an e-ticket for public transport thanks to a virtual transponder produced by LEGIC Identsystems.

Establishing this functionality on the contactless Visa payWave card does not require an additional chip. The applications are simply stored in a secure LEGIC virtual multi-application transponder on the micro-controller of the credit card. The LEGIC card-in-card solution offers this possibility and meets a growing demand for converged access and payment solutions as well as integrating applications for personal identification.

“Visa payWave is an example of how multi-function smart cards can provide cardholder benefits,” said Sandra Alzetta, senior vice president Innovation Visa Europe. [end]
