INSIDE Contactless Wave-Me initiative adds more uses for mobile phones

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

Seeking to simplify and improve the way consumers interact with their mobile phones, INSIDE Contactless has introduced its Wave-Me initiative, a collection of application software, NFC tags and services for handset manufacturers and wireless operators that can speed the development of NFC applications and allow consumers to load these applications into their handsets.

INSIDE’s Wave-Me Java applet, Wave-Me Handset Pack and Over-the-Wave side loading technology extend NFC’s capabilities to provide consumers with out-of-the-box NFC functionality that accelerates access to services while opening the door for operators and third-party service providers to new service, branding and revenue opportunities.

The Wave-Me technologies will be displayed at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Feb. 16-19.

When installed on an NFC handset, the Wave-Me Java applet can automatically execute a series of keystrokes when the handset is waved near a corresponding Wave-Me NFC tag embedded, for example, in a poster at a bus stop. The phone could then be waved by the “next bus” symbol to determine an arrival time.

Wave-Me tags could also contain relevant phone numbers or URLs to send SMS messages or send and retrieve information from web sites.

Merchants and other businesses can sponsor the various Wave-Me applications, with the possibility of displaying branding information not only on the tag itself, but also on the handset screen during the use of the applet.

INSIDE’s Wave-Me Pack gives handset makers and operators an assortment of pre-preprogrammed NFC tags they can bundle with their handsets to give consumers out-of-the box access to applications and services. [end]

Market research firm Deloitte has released its predictions for the telecoms sector in 2012, which include a few caveats regarding NFC payments.

According to Deloitte, many people are still uncomfortable with the idea of paying with their phones due to concerns over security and the battery draining aspects of NFC – a perception service providers are going to have to overcome before widespread adoption can happen.
