Pittsburg smart card transit system delayed

The smart card transit system that was supposed to be deployed by Pittsburg Port Authority and Allegheny County was been delayed until officials figure out how to pay for it, according to a Pittsburg Tribune Review article.

Allegheny County and the transit agency cannot agree on how to pay their $1.1 million share of a $33 million contract just approved to install the equipment next year.


The project would replace the existing fare system with a smart card collection system. Riders would buy fares with a reloadable card, similar to a debit card, that they could swipe across a reader as they board or exit buses and T cars. It could be running by 2010.

Oracle Corporation has announced that its latest Java Card 3.0.4 platform will include support for NFC to enable secure communication between devices, reports Hothardware.com.

According to Oracle, Java Card enables smart cards and other devices with very limited memory to run small applications, called applets, that employ Java technology. Almost any type of smart card can use Java Card technology, including SIM cards, bank cards, government and health care IDs, smart transit tickets and physical and logical access control credentials.

NFC may get the breakthrough it needs with upcoming city transit projects and a new line of Nokia phones, according to Network World.

Just last week, Nokia announced that next year’s batch of Symbian mobile phones will contain NFC technology. ABI Research says this move will spark growth in the number of NFC chipset vendors, ultimately resulting in lower costs for phone vendors due to boosted competition.
