Music fans use PayPass at Dubai concert

Monday, November 24, 2008

Fans attending Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue’s concert in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, last week were able to use MasterCard’s PayPass card at specially allocated food and beverage counters. That meant they could get back to the concert faster without having to spend time in long lines.

MasterCard teamed up with event organizer, AEG Live, card solutions provider Network International and MasterCard PayPass issuer Dubai First to accept the contactless payment solution at Kylie Ann Minogue’s Nov. 21 concert at Dubai Festival City, a large residential, business and entertainment development.

MasterCard introduced contactless payments to the UAE market more than 15 months ago. Consumers can currently use their MasterCard PayPass at Burger King, Choithram and Cinnabon. Several other shopping and entertainment locations across the UAE also accept PayPass.

As of Q3 2008, there were about 44 million MasterCard PayPass cards and devices in use at nearly 135,000 merchant locations worldwide, including vending, taxis, tollbooths and transit. PayPass card and device issuance has more than doubled during the past 12 months. [end]

MasterCard Australia has announced that more than 1 million contactless PayPass transactions were recorded during the month of August.

According to Insider Retailing, this marks the first time that PayPass “Tap and Go” payments have surpassed the 1 million transaction milestone since the technology was introduced in Australia several years ago, indicating growing acceptance of contactless payments.
