INSIDE, FIME want to solve NFC testing, certification challenges

Friday, October 31, 2008

Seeking to ensure continued NFC growth and acceptance, two French companies–contactless chip maker INSIDE Contactless and FIME, a smart card and terminal testing solutions provider–have partnered to speed up the attainment of NFC interoperability. The two companies hope to identify and resolve potential conflicts in NFC devices and develop a process for testing and certifying NFC-enabled handsets.

INSIDE and FIME plan to offer their customers greater visibility into the testing and certification requirements at an early stage of development of their NFC mobile handset products, and provide them with products, tools and services to ensure compliance. The partnership also intends to consult with various standards bodies, including the NFC Forum and payment and transport associations to boost or amend current certification standards.

“By developing this comprehensive test and certification process, our customers will be able to avoid the kinds of early market problems that plagued other technologies by ensuring interoperability of NFC devices from day one,” said INSIDE’s Philippe Martineau, executive vice president of the NFC Business line.

NFC devices not only have to comply with the NFC Forum’s requirements and include the minimum interoperability level, but also with ETSI standards for HCI and SWP protocols. In addition, they need to be able to cohabitate with traditional NFC applications, as well as a large range of legacy applications and infrastructure combining payment, transport, access control, loyalty and other applications.

On top of all those requirements, there is also the issue of connecting to the SIM card or other secure element. As a result, the complex relationship between the NFC chip and the handset application framework requires a new dimension in testing to ensure an optimal interoperability level for contactless applications. [end]

The Smart Card Alliance Transportation Council has published a white paper examining how the transit industry can best make use of NFC technology.

“One of the major challenges facing transit agencies today is how to capitalize on the ever-growing popularity of mobile phones with a solid mobile strategy,” said Transportation Council Chairman Craig Roberts. “This white paper builds on the knowledge base developed in earlier white papers to foster a greater understanding of NFC technology, explain its role in the transit industry, and shed light on key issues facing the transit industry in developing a mobile strategy.”

STMicroelectronic’s CD21-Rev3 microcontroller, used widely in Calyso contactless travel cards, has been validated by FIME as compliant to the EMV Contactless Communication Protocol V2.0.1.

According to ST, the EMV specification describes the minimum functions required for Proximity Integrated Circuit Cards (PICCs) and Proximity Coupling Devices (PCDs) to ensure correct operation and market interoperability. This certification confirms that the Calypso chip is the first to market that supports both transport and payment applications.
