Smart Card Alliance announces board, executive leadership

The Smart Card Alliance today announced its 2008-2009 board and seven-member executive committee.

The Alliance board of directors held elections for the executive committee at the organization’s annual government conference this month in Washington, D.C. The executive committee will serve in a leadership role for the board and direct the activities of the executive director, the staff and the organization’s industry councils for the year ahead.


The elected executive committee is made up of the following board members: · Chair - Greg Garback, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)
· Vice chair - Neville Pattinson, Gemalto
· Treasurer - Robert Merkert, Sr., CardLogix
· Secretary - Linda Brown, Infineon Technologies
· Assistant treasurer - Willy Dommen, Booz Allen Hamilton
· Technology vice chair - Roger Roehr, Tyco International

Oracle Corporation has announced that its latest Java Card 3.0.4 platform will include support for NFC to enable secure communication between devices, reports Hothardware.com.

According to Oracle, Java Card enables smart cards and other devices with very limited memory to run small applications, called applets, that employ Java technology. Almost any type of smart card can use Java Card technology, including SIM cards, bank cards, government and health care IDs, smart transit tickets and physical and logical access control credentials.

Fujitsu and Boeing have established an alliance in which the companies will develop a service to enable greater efficiency in aircraft maintenance operations.

The partnership will employ RFID devices and contact memory buttons to enable customers to use these technologies without needing to retrofit their own fleets, thus allowing airlines to reduce costs by eliminating inventory and manual data entry errors without having to create new processes.
