HID card printer FIPS 201 certified

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 in News

HID Global announced that its Fargo HDP5000-LC High Definition Printer has been certified as FIPS 201 compliant by the United States General Services Administration and placed on the FIPS 201 Approved Products List.

The certification enables government agencies and other organizations to use HID Global’s HDP technology to comply with the FIPS 201 standard as mandated by HSPD-12. The directive establishes a government-wide standard for ID cards for all federal employees and contractors.

HDP is a technology for the personalization of contactless proximity, laser and smart cards with microprocessor chips. The HDP process prints images onto the under side of a special film that fuses to the surface of a card through heat and pressure.

Since this process transfers dyes and resins directly onto a smooth, flexible film, the print head never comes in contact with the card surface. Because of this the print quality is not impacted by card surface imperfections that are not even with the card surface such as smart chips, ridges caused by the internal antennae or debris. Similarly, smart chips or antennae are unaffected by heat from the print head. [end]
