Scotland on track to replace tickets with smart cards

Oyster-like smart cards could be on the way for Scotland’s busiest rail route. But an infrastructure still has to be built, which means even trials could be three years away.

Season ticket holders on the Edinburgh-Glasgow line would receive credit-card size plastic passes which would enable tickets to be automatically renewed via bank debits. Holders may even be able to use their smart cards to automatically pay for rail journeys on other routes without having to buy a separate ticket.
