Korean Starbucks swept up in payWave

Coffee giant Starbucks has indicated that cash may soon go the way of yesterday’s soggy grounds. Joining the growing list of major retailers in Asia accepting contactless transactions, the company has announced it will accept Visa payWave at its South Korean locations.

To explain the move, representatives of Starbucks and Visa point to the convenience faster transactions – their average cash transaction takes 12 to 14 seconds, compared to as little as four to six a Visa payWave payment – offers their customers.


“Technology is meant to better our lives and the less time customers spend in queues, the more time they have to enjoy their cup of coffee,” Kim Young Chong, South Korea country manager for Visa Korea said.

Customer will be allowed to make purchases of up to KRW 30,000 via the payWave system. [end] 

The UK’s YESpay International and YES-wallet.com have teamed up to build an NFC-enabled cloud-based mobile payments platform.

By integrating the YES-wallet Pouch digital wallet with YESpay EMBOSS payment service, the companies will provide a platform that encompasses e-Money, pre-paid and gift-card payments based on Visa PayWave and MasterCard PayPass contactless standards.

Entertainment retail chain HMV has announced it will adopt Visa payWave contactless payments in 116 stores across Canada.

Starting this month, HMV customers nationwide will be able to pay for music, DVDs, video games, books and more with a simple tap of their contactless payWave-enabled credit or debit card at the point of sale.

Metro Inc. is partnering with Visa to bring payWave contactless payments to its chain of 600 grocery stores across Ontario and Quebec.

Beginning early next year, shoppers at Metro, Metro Plus, Super C and Food Basics will be able to pay for items with a tap of a contactless Visa credit or debit card against a reader at the point of sale.
