ACS to acquire Orbital Sciences' Transportation Management Systems business

Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Affiliated Computer Services Inc. has signed on to expand its global public transit service capabilities with the acquisition of Orbital Sciences Corporation’s Transport Management Systems business for $42.5 million.

TMS is the nation’s leading provider of GPS-based fleet management systems, the acquisition makes ACS the only company capable of providing both fare collection and fleet management system capabilities.

ACS’ transportation industry services already include electronic toll collection programs such as E-ZPass, public transit fare collection, parking systems, red light speed photo enforcement and PrePass, a service that allows transponder equipped trucks to bypass weigh stations.

ACS provides systems and services to public transportation agencies worldwide. ACS’ Transportation Solutions business helps government agencies in more than 30 countries through revenue collection and regulation compliance services. [end]

The Smart Card Alliance Transportation Council has published a white paper examining how the transit industry can best make use of NFC technology.

“One of the major challenges facing transit agencies today is how to capitalize on the ever-growing popularity of mobile phones with a solid mobile strategy,” said Transportation Council Chairman Craig Roberts. “This white paper builds on the knowledge base developed in earlier white papers to foster a greater understanding of NFC technology, explain its role in the transit industry, and shed light on key issues facing the transit industry in developing a mobile strategy.”
