Caen France hosts world’s premier NFC trial with mobile phones enabling host of contactless applications

Some 200 mobile phone users in Caen, in the northwestern part of France, are learning first hand what Near Field Communications (NFC) technology is all about. Want to buy something? Wave your cell phone. Want to use a car park? Hold your cell phone up to the reader. Want information on a tourist site? Hold your cell phone…well, you get the idea. As the Caen trial illustrates, the cell phone is becoming the “Swiss Army Knife” of the modern world.

Mobile and network security provider AuthenTec has released the AuthenTec AE2750, a fingerprint sensor designed for use in mobile commerce applications.

The AE2750 contains many features found in smart sensor designs, such as a 192 pixel by 8 pixel fingerprint sensor array. It also offers hybrid fingerprint matching on a sensor match and host match, AES, RSA and SHA encryption block and One Time Password generation. The device can mount on smart phones, tablest and touchscreen-enabled mobile devices.

Mobile operator Digicel Pacific Limited has announced the deployment of VeriFone’s mWallet services and NFC-enabled payment systems in the Kingdom of Tonga.

Starting this week, Digicel subscribers in the the Tongan capital Nuku’alofa will be able to receive NFC tags that are linked to their mobile phone numbers and VeriFone’s contactless payment acceptance systems. Customers can affix these tags to their phones to tap and pay at over 50 merchants in Nuku’alofa.
