Contactless 101: Coding data for transmission via radio waves

So just how does the modulating of radio waves enable data transmission? The answer is found in the concept of coding. Coding refers to a modulation pattern that is understood and shared by both a transponder and a receiver. Like Morse code–the series of dots and dashes used to transmit data in the past– radio frequency coding relies on two states to indicate binary data. The states can be thought of as modulated and un-modulated, though different coding schemes encode data into the modulating states in different manners.

The Beijing Metro has deployed a new access control system that uses HID Global’s network access controllers and contactless readers.

HID is providing its VertX V1000 network access controller and iCLASS R10 readers for the new system, which enables control center staff to monitor and control access to a variety of facilities, including offices, electrical substations and parking lots, along the Metro’s 11-station Fangshan line.

STMicroelectronics developed a new RF testing method that uses electromagnetic waves instead of contact probes to remotely evaluate wafers equipped with RFID ICs.

According to ST, this “contactless” approach results in higher yields, shorter testing times and lower product cost. In addition, contactless testing allows RF circuits to be tested under conditions that are close to the real application conditions.
