RFID tracks elders' movements at high-tech retirement community

A retirement community in Oregon is using RFID wristbands to continuosly monitor the movements of residents across its 6-acre campus. The system alerts staff when a resident exits a building and can also send alerts at other pre-defined occurences. Family members can log onto a website and track their relative as they go about their daily movements. While this sounds a bit like a cross between the scifi-classic Logan’s Run and a house arrest system, it is just another of the growing uses of contactless technologies.

According to the a staff member at the site, relatives can “see what’s going on: Are they spending a lot of time in their apartment or are they out on an outing with other residents.”
